If you can’t remember the password to log in to your Mac user account, or the password doesn’t work, follow steps to reset your password.
Use the reset options in Recovery.
- Make sure that your Mac is turned off. If you can’t shut it down normally, press and hold its power button for up to 10 seconds, until your Mac turns off. (Every Mac has a power button. On laptop computers that have Touch ID, press and hold the Touch ID button.)
- Press and hold the power button again. As you continue to hold it, your Mac will turn on and load startup options. When you see “Loading startup options” or the Options icon, release the power button.
- Click Options, then click the Continue button that will appear beneath it.
While starting up from Recovery, you’ll be asked to select a user you know the password for. Click “Forgot all passwords?”
The window will prompt you to enter the recovery key, get in contact with an IT Admin and they will be able to provide it, after entering the recovery key you will be able to enter a new password for your Mac account.
