No FileVault Recovery Key & Forgot Laptop Password?

  1. Shut down your Mac. If you can’t shut it down normally, press and hold the Touch ID button for up to 10 seconds until your Mac turns off. 


  2. Press and hold the Touch ID button - HOLD. As you continue to hold it, your Mac will turn on and load startup options. When you see “Loading startup options” or the Options icon, release the Touch ID button.


  3. Click Options, then click the Continue button that will appear beneath it.

4. Go to the top menu bar and you should see at the top of the screen an Apple menu  

5. Go to “Utilities” in the Apple menu OR Click “Terminal.” Or press Shift-Command-T on your keyboard to open Terminal.

6. In the Terminal window that opens, type  resetpassword, then press enter on your keyboard.

7. In the window that opens, choose a reset option, such as “I forgot my password” or “My password doesn’t work when logging in”. Then click Next and follow the onscreen instructions.

8. After you provide the requested information, you will be asked to create a new password for your laptop.

You can then restart your Mac via the Apple menu and log in with the new password.
